چکیده

Shivering is regarded as an important process for chemical regulation of body temperature. Attempts have been made by many investigators to find out the cause of shivering in the function of the therrnoregulatory center. On the other hand, Takagi1) reported in his study of skin pressure reflexes that shivering was inhibited by pressure applied to the skin and augmented by touch. These facts suggest that shivering may be controlled by peripheral nerves. As a part of studies upon the reflex control of shivering, investigation was made on action from the carotid sinus.

Carotid Sinus Baroreceptor Reflex Effects upon Myocardial Contractility.

• At the present time, the reflex effects of stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors on atrial and ventricular dynamics are the subject of controversy. Several investigators have suggested that stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors has a reflex negative inotropic effect directly upon cardiac performance." The work of Sarnoff and co-workers ° has adduced substantial evidence for ...

Reflex regulation of ventricular work performance.

Previous investigators have concluded that the contractility of the ventricle is reflexly modified by alterations of pressure within the carotid sinuses.1" Others were unable to confirm these findings and concluded that intrinsic adaptation of the myocardium to altered hemodynamic conditions was sufficient to explain the changes of cardiac performance.! The carotid sinus reflex is known to be c...

Hypersensitive Carotid Sinus Reflex

A patient with transient, intermittent, complete heart block had periods of asystole, accompanied by syncope, whenever his cardiac rhythm shifted spontaneously from regular sinus rhythm to complete auriculoventricular dissociation. Similar clinical and electrocardiographic findings were produced by carotid sinus pressure when there was regular sinus rhythm. During the periods of heart block car...

Vagus nerves and baroreceptor control of ventricular performance.

• Several recent studies have shown that stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors exerts a reflex, negative inotropic effect upon ventricular performance." Since it was generally accepted that the vagus nerves do not directly influence the ventricular myocardium," it was assumed that the efferent fibers of the carotido-ventricular reflex traversed sympathetic pathways exclusively. In many...

The effect of activation of carotid body chemoreceptors on baroreceptor inhibition of sympathetic activity.

The effect of combined stimulation of peripheral chemo- and baroreceptors upon sympathetic discharge was studied in cats anesthetized with chloralose and urethan, immobilized with tricuran, and artificially ventilated. The right carotid sinus was arterially isolated, the left sinus nerve and both vago-sympathetic trunks were cut. A rise of pressure in isolated carotid sinus from 100 to 200 mm H...
